911. Stroke treatment may come from physiological determinations not ...
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-10/uopm-stm102803.php

Description: Determining the type of treatment for acute stroke caused by blockage of large vessels in the brain can best be decided by measuring both the amount of brain tissue that is threatened but not yet dead (ischemic penumbra) and the amount of brain that is already dead (ischemic core), according to groundbreaking University of Pittsburgh research published in the October issue of Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association.
912. Test has potential to warn of strokes and heart attacks
http://www.sunspot.net/news/health/bal-te.medbriefs27oct27,0,2699784.story?coll=bal-health-headlines

Description: A blood test may be able to predict whether there's a heart attack or stroke, bypass surgery or angioplasty in your immediate future. Identified by Cleveland Clinic researchers, it measures inflammation in the arteries by tracking an enzyme known as myeloperoxidase, or MPO.
913. Study: Blood Test Could Predict Heart Attack, Stroke
http://www.nbc17.com/health/2576656/detail.html

Description: A blood test may be able to predict whether there's a heart attack, stroke or bypass surgery in your immediate future. Researchers said the experimental test measures the level of inflammation in the arteries by tracking an enzyme known as myeloperoxidase (MPO).
914. Corkscrew device 'may save stroke victims'
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_831060.html

Description: Brain experts claim a corkscrew device capable of removing blood clots might finally offer hope for victims of the most devastating strokes.
915. Bone marrow fusion with nerve cells may repair damage, Stanford ...
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-10/sumc-bmf101503.php

Description: Bone marrow cells can fuse with specialized brain cells, possibly bolstering the brain cells or repairing damage, according to research from the Stanford University School of Medicine. This finding helps resolve an ongoing debate: Do adult stem cells transform from bone marrow cells into other cell types, such as brain, muscle or liver cells, or do they fuse with those cells to form a single entity with two nuclei? The research shows that for complex brain cells called Purkinje cells, fusion is the normal pathway.
916. Walkers pound pavement for Heart Association
http://www.thetimesherald.com/news/stories/20031012/localnews/439409.html

Description: Most walkers in Saturday's Blue Water American Heart Walk came out for personal reasons -- they've either lost a loved one to heart disease or have suffered from it themselves. They raised money to help the American Heart Association conduct research for and provide education about heart diseases and stroke.
917. New Engineering Center Focuses On Implantable Prosthetics
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/10/031009070150.htm

Description: Implantable microelectronic devices for overcoming blindness, paralysis, and stroke damage are the focus of a new center in which engineers from UCSC are collaborating with scientists at the University of Southern California and the California Insitute of Technology.
918. Imagining movement of affected limbs aids stroke rehabilitation
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-10/nu-imo100703.php

Description: Imagining movement of arms and legs that have been weakened from stroke may facilitate functional recovery of affected limbs, a Northwestern University study has found. The effects of stroke vary, based on the type of stroke and its severity and location in the brain. The majority of strokes affect one of the brain's hemispheres, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis on the opposite side of the body -- a condition known as hemiparesis.
919. Antidepressants may improve survival after stroke
http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=3850

Description: Whether you're depressed or not, antidepressants may be good for you after a stroke. New research suggests that stroke patients who receive these drugs for just a few weeks live longer than their peers who don't. Moreover, this benefit was noted in patients with and without depression, according to findings reported in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
