851. Chronic stress tied to heart, stroke risks in men
http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4488

Description: Chronic stress tied to heart, stroke risks in menJun 30 (Reuters Health) - A stress-filled life really does seem to raise the odds of heart disease and stroke down the road, according to a large study from Sweden. The researchers found that among more than 13,600 men and women followed since middle-age, those who reported chronic stress at the study's outset faced a somewhat higher risk of fatal or non-fatal heart disease or stroke over the years.
852. Low triglycerides tied to more severe stroke
http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4489

Description: Low triglycerides tied to more severe strokeJun 30 (Reuters Health) - You should reduce levels of cholesterol and triglycerides as much as possible, right? Well, in terms of stroke, that advice may go too far. Low triglyceride levels are associated with increased stroke severity, according to results of a study published in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke.
853. Vitamin C May Ward Off Stroke
http://www.ajc.com/health/content/shared-auto/healthnews/vita/515972.html

Description: TUESDAY, Nov. 11 (HealthDayNews) -- People who eat a diet rich in vitamin C may be at lower risk of suffering strokes, and smokers who do so may benefit the most. A new Dutch study finds people with the lowest amount of vitamin C in their diets were 30 percent more likely to have a stroke than people with the highest amount of it.
854. Therapy Restores Arm Function Years After Stroke
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/health/content/shared-auto/healthnews/ther/519755.html

Description: FRIDAY, June 25 (HealthDayNews) -- Stroke patients left with impaired arm movement for an average of nine years made impressive gains after undergoing a new kind of physiotherapy, researchers report. What's more, the therapy, called bilateral repetitive rhythmic training intervention (BATRAC), appears to work by re-wiring the brain's motor control circuitry. "This is the first study to prove that BATRAC therapy also has a neuroscience basis," said German researcher Dr. Andreas R. Luft, of the University of Tubingen.

Description: HOUSTON (AP) - A jury awarded $7.4 million to a woman who suffered brain damage in a stroke two years ago after taking a diet supplement that contained the now-banned herbal stimulant ephedra. The jury found Wednesday that San Diego-based marketer Metabolife International acted maliciously when it falsely told state and federal regulators that its Metabolife supplement had no adverse effects and that the company had comprehensive safety monitoring procedures.
856. Two Conditions, One Pill
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040623/nyw022_1.html

Description: An estimated thirty million Americans have both high blood pressure and high cholesterol. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are two of the major risk factors for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Each condition alone is cause for concern, but these diseases frequently occur together and in combination pose a much greater risk for heart attack and stroke. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are not always treated together. In fact, one study found that fewer than one-in-ten patients were able to reach their blood pressure and cholesterol recommended levels. Caduet, which was recently approved by the FDA, is the first medication that treats both high blood pressure and high cholesterol in a single pill. Description: Adult human neural stem cells derived from a patient's own tissue offer a promising source of replacement neurons, useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, according to Michel Levesque, M.D., a physician, neuroscientist and neurosurgeon based at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Levesque presented this and other medical findings related to adult stem cell research today on Capitol Hill to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space. As one of the nation's leading medical research pioneers, Levesque was invited by the Senate to discuss the current experience of his research team with the use of stem cells in humans, and more specifically, adult neural stem cell-derived neurons, for neurodegenerative disorders.
858. Twice as many children are suffering strokes than was previously ...
http://www.news-medical.net/default.asp?id=2706

Description: Twice as many children are suffering strokes than was previously believed, according to new findings by a Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Stroke Network researcher who is one of Canada’s leading pediatric neurologists. “We’re seeing double the numbers of stroke in general,” says Dr. Gabrielle deVeber, who will be chairing a session on Stroke in Children and Young Adults today at the 5th World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, B.C. “That’s for both ischemic stroke (blood flow in the brain interrupted by a clot) and haemorrhagic (bleeding into the brain from a ruptured blood vessel). It’s much more common than was previously recognized.”
859. Health-care disparities plague Hispanics

860. African Americans suffer from cardiovascular diseases at a rate ...
http://www.news-medical.net/default.asp?id=2363

Description: African Americans suffer from cardiovascular diseases at a rate about five times higher than the rest of the U.S. population. In a new study, scientists may have found a culprit: a serious deficiency of nitric oxide, a small molecule vital in the regulation of blood flow and blood pressure. The research team, led by Ohio University biochemist Tadeusz Malinski, examined the blood vessel cells of 12 white and 12 black healthy female subjects. Using a system of nanosensors, they discovered that the cardiovascular systems of African-American subjects as young as 20 years of age could show signs of an unbalanced nitric oxide system that could become increasingly worse as they grow older, according to research published in a recent issue of Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association.
