841. Study Questions Combo Therapy for Stroke Patients http://www.ajc.com/health/content/shared-auto/healthnews/stro/520248.html 2004-07-23 15:04:51 Description: Using aspirin with a clot-preventing drug for people at high risk of artery problems after a stroke does slightly more harm than good, a new international study finds. "It has a small benefit in terms of reducing the risk of another stroke, myocardial infarction [heart attack] or death, but there is a significant increase in bleeding complications," said Dr. Hans-Christopher Diener, a professor of neurology at the University of Essen, Germany. |

842. Study: Patients should not rely only on aspirin to prevent strokes http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4557 2004-07-23 12:15:00 Description: Aspirin may not prevent a stroke, and patients should not rely on aspirin therapy alone to reduce the risk of stroke. This was the message that researchers want to publicize, following a study in which almost half of patients were found to be "aspirin resistant." Researchers from Northwestern Memorial Hospital studied patients who were on aspirin therapy. |

843. New treatment may cure common type of arrhythmia http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4555 2004-07-23 12:14:57 Description: A new type of catheter may someday lead to a nonsurgical cure for the most common type of heart arrhythmia. A clinical study has begun to test the effectiveness of a cryogenic catheter, designed to treat atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation affects an estimated 2.3 million Americans. It can cause blood to pool within the atria, which can cause potentially dangerous blood clots. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular conditions. |

844. Stroke Severity Deems Where Patients Go Later http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=97&ncid=751&e=10&u=/hsn/20040722/hl_hsn/strokeseveri tydeemswherepatientsgolater 2004-07-22 15:12:48 Description: THURSDAY, July 22 (HealthDayNews) -- The stronger a stroke is, the more likely the victim will be sent to a rehabilitation or nursing home rather than back to his own home, new research says. The study traced the release of 546 patients from three countries who had suffered severe strokes as measured by the National Institutes of Health (news - web sites) Stroke Scale. All were treated with powerful clot-busting drugs. About 44 percent of the patients were discharged to home, while 56 percent were sent to rehabilitation or a nursing facility, said the researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. |

845. Web site lauds good doctors http://www.aztrib.com/index.php?sty=24867 2004-07-16 15:08:28 Description: With very little objective information available for people to choose a physician, a nonprofit organization has launched a Web site listing about 1,800 doctors nationwide who have met quality-ofcare standards for treating diabetes, stroke or cardiac conditions. The database, which can be accessed at www.ncqa.org/PhysicianQualityReports.htm, is relatively small. Only two Arizona doctors are listed. But the tool is a step in the right direction, said Brian Schilling, a spokesman for the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a health care accrediting firm that released the information. |

846. Risk of dementia increases after stroke http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4524 2004-07-12 12:14:29 Description: Jul 12 (Reuters Health) - The likelihood of developing dementia is high after stroke, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Neurology. The study also found that the characteristics of post- stroke dementia appear to shift. In the first years after stroke it seems to be an Alzheimer-type disease, then changes to a vascular dementia type in later years. |

847. Age at menopause not linked to death from stroke http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/home/research-detail.cfm?reutersid=4517 2004-07-09 12:12:28 Description: Jul 09 (Reuters Health) - Women who experience menopause at an early age seem to be prone to coronary heart disease, several recent studies have shown. However, a woman's age at menopause does not appear to be related to death from stroke, new research suggests. As such, women who go through menopause in their early 40s are no more or less likely to die from stroke than women who don't experience this life transition until their 50s. |

848. New Therapy Helps Victims of Alexia http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/ledgerenquirer/news/nation/9084803.htm 2004-07-05 15:10:18 Description: An experimental therapy is helping people with a bewildering condition called alexia, which can leave its victims speaking normally and able to spell words aloud but unable to read. A stroke left Bill seeing written letters that looked like gibberish - devastating to an educated 62-year-old left terrified of getting lost amid street signs he couldn't decipher. The condition occurs when damage from a stroke or other head injury severs a crucial connection in the complex brain system required for reading. "We're getting information about the shape of the letter into the part of the brain that knows that shape," but in a different way, explains Georgetown University neurology professor Rhonda Friedman, who is leading the experiment funded by the National Institutes of Health. It's too early to know how well the technique works, although Friedman and co-researcher Susan Lott report that a handful of patients so far, some who hadn't recognized letters in years, have mastered menus, signs and other everyday reading tasks. |

849. Western diet could increase stroke risk http://www.healthandage.com/Home/gm=1!gid1=5996 2004-07-02 09:18:07 Description: Western diet could increase stroke risk Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist A long running study compares a healthy diet and a 'Western' diet with respect to stroke risk. The Nurses' Health Study has been looking into the risk factors that affect health since 1984 and a new report now finds a link between diet and stroke. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have found two dietary patterns in the group of nearly 72,000 nurses, which they terms 'prudent' and 'Western'. The prudent diet comprises higher intakes of fruit, vegetables, fish, legumes and whole grains. The Western diet is focused more on red and processed meat, refined grains, sweets and desserts. Those with the highest Western diet score had a 58 per cent higher stroke risk than those with the lowest score. Those with the highest prudent diet score had a 22 per cent lower risk of stroke than those with the lowest score (but the researchers find this result not to be statistically significant). Women on the Western diet with high blood pressure were also three times more likely to have a stroke than those who ate the Western diet but did not have high blood pressure. These results are quite likely to apply to men. A shift towards the prudent diet and away from the Western diet could, therefore, cut the risk of having a stroke. |

850. Cutting Down on Stroke Damage http://www.healthcentral.com/news/NewsFullText.cfm?id=519843 2004-06-30 15:12:55 Description: WEDNESDAY, June 30 (HealthDayNews) -- The athletic performance supplement creatine reduced the risk of stroke-related brain injury in mice. Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston report their finding in the June 30 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. The results suggest creatine may help prevent stroke-related brain damage in humans. |
