797. Baby teeth provide life-giving stem cells http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?c_id=5&ObjectID=9001636 2004-12-03 12:09:27 Description: Baby teeth provide life-giving stem cells 04.12.04 by Ben Sandilands In future, children will not be putting their early teeth aside for the tooth fairy to collect, but putting them instead into a stem cell bank. Rather than being rewarded with a coin, stem cells within the tooth will be stored to cure them of some of the deadliest afflictions they might suffer half a century later. "Parents will want to store the stem cells found in the pulp inside these juvenile teeth in liquid nitrogen" says Dr Stan Gronthos, a haematologist at the Hanson Institute in Adelaide, South Australia. "That way they could be used to grow new teeth and perhaps even cure neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease." He predicts they will become effective for growing replacement brain tissue to overcome stroke damage as well as basal cell degradation linked with Parkinson's. |

800. New Stroke Therapy Being Studied Shows Promise http://www.thewbalchannel.com/health/3954628/detail.html 2004-11-29 12:14:47 Description: It has been 10 months since Alan Lettieri suffered a stroke. Lettieri has made a lot of strides since then, but he's hoping a new type of therapy will help him even more. This therapy involves wearing a padded mitt on his good hand and with his affected, weaker hand, he is asked to perform simple tasks. "Actually, the theoretical basis is if you can force the individual to use the limb that has been affected by the stroke, you can cause something called cortico reorganization. Cortico reorganization means that you are getting the brain to reorganize itself," said Jackie Brennan, occupational therapist at Worcester State College. What Lettieri is doing is a modified version of an intense therapy known as constraint-induced movement therapy. |
