734. Statins May Cut Stroke Disability, Deaths http://www.obviousnews.com/breakingnews/stories/obviousnews-556175.html 2005-04-12 15:12:15 Description: Statins May Cut Stroke Disability, Deaths The cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins -- such as Lipitor The researchers, led by Dr. Majaz Moonis, found that patients who were taking statins before they had a stroke had a 70 percent better chance of being sent home from the hospital than stroke patients who were not on statins. The study of 1618 patients detected a robust benefit even if patients began the drug just 4 weeks earlier, suggesting the drug has protective effects beyond lowering cholesterol. Moonis, at the Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center Stroke Prevention Clinic in Worcester, said the benefits were even more striking for patients prescribed statins for the first time within 1 week after the stroke. |

Singhal of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, told Reuters Health. "Our results, though preliminary, raise the exciting possibility that stroke patients...may benefit simply by breathing large amounts of oxygen as soon as possible after symptom onset." Singhal and colleagues randomly assigned 16 patients who had started to have a stroke less than 10 hours beforehand to 8 hours of treatment with high-flow oxygen delivered via facemask, or to normal room air. |

736. Marijuana Ingredient Slows Artery Aging http://www.foodconsumer.org/777/8/marijuana_artery_health.shtml 2005-04-10 15:09:51 Description: Marijuana Ingredient Slows Artery Aging By David Liu Apr 10, 2005, 13:13 Email this article Printer friendly page A study published in a recent issue of Nature indicated that a marijuana ingredient called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, when used as a dietary supplement may lower the risk of heart disease and stroke in humans. In the study, researchers fed mice that were genetically prone to atherosclerosis a diet with a high-cholesterol diet supplemented with a small amount of THC for 11 weeks. The researchers found that those mice that received THC showed less blood vessel clogging or slower progression of atherosclerosis - hardening of the arteries, which is a primary cause of heart disease and stroke caused at least partly by artery inflammation. |

737. Marijuana Good for the Arteries http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/9953 2005-04-06 15:11:47 Description: A Geneva University study shows that THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, helps prevent coronary artery disease in mice. This is good news for dope smoking mice, indeed. Cannabis Compound Slows Artery Disease in Mice (Reuters) An active ingredient in cannabis can ease inflammation and slow the progression of coronary artery disease in mice, and possibly humans, researchers said on Wednesday. Daily low doses of the ingredient, THC, prevented atherosclerosis, a primary cause of heart disease and stroke in western countries, without producing the associated high. "We have proven that very low doses of cannabis therapy will have an anti-inflammatory effect that will slow the progression of atherosclerosis in mice," said Dr Francois Mach, of Geneva University Hospital in Switzerland. |

740. Study: Aspirin doesn’t help women at risk for heart attacks http://www.news8austin.com/content/headlines/?ArID=134638&SecID=2 2005-04-04 12:13:15 Description: 6:34 am Study: Aspirin doesn’t help women at risk for heart attacks 4/4/2005 10:19 AM By: CNN Many Americans at risk for heart attacks and strokes use aspirin to help prevent them from happening. But a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests in healthy women, it might not. Doctors have long recommended some patients take a low dose of aspirin daily, but that was based on studies in men. Now, they have results of a trial in women. “In the population of women who are in that age group of 45 to 65, there is no evidence that aspirin provides a benefit in preventing heart disease,” Dr. Stuart Seides of Washington Hospital Center said. They did find, however, a trade off: daily aspirin in healthy women does help prevent stroke -- a benefit the men don't get. |
