They think the very small microclots that can cause a stroke may also trigger migraines. The clots come from a very small hole in the heart that everyone is born with, but usually closes up as we get older. The heart-migraine connection was first noticed when patients who had their heart-hole closed because they’d suffered a stroke - also stopped having migraines. |

690. Hot Cocoa Has Heart Benefits, Study Says http://www.thecarolinachannel.com/health/4832574/detail.html 2005-08-10 12:10:49 Description: Hot Cocoa Has Heart Benefits, Study Says POSTED: 10:19 am EDT August 10, 2005 Cocoa, aside from offering a delightful flavor, has long been used as a medicine for many ailments. New research suggests that the treat may also have a beneficial effect on heart disease and stroke. A research team in Southampton in England found that drinking a cup of cocoa can help prevent potentially fatal blood clots. The findings will be presented Wednesday at a meeting of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis in Sydney, Australia. Blood clots that lodge in the brain or heart could cause a stroke or a heart attack. Cells in the blood called platelets are necessary for clotting to occur, and the researchers found that cocoa inhibits platelet function. |
