Description: New implant technology could transform lives and be a step towards real-life bionic people Few of us would be without our miniaturised gadgets: camera phones, digital diaries and iPods. But the same technologies that enable such devices to insinuate themselves into our lives are also powering what may be an even more far-reaching revolution. The lives of many people have been transformed in recent months after miniaturised devices were installed deep within their bodies. Electrodes the size of a grain of rice and batteries no bigger than a lighter can deliver tiny electrical currents to nerves that control the working of the guts, the movement of limbs and the firing of brain cells responsible for epilepsy, migraine and relentless headaches.

673. Feds plan temporary cities for evacuees
http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/nation/12660705.htm

Description: Marion Orsini, 75, moved into an air-conditioned trailer last week at the end of a dirt road in remote Patterson. Orsini, who has no family and is disabled from a stroke six years ago, doesn't know what happened to his former neighbors, his car is flooded and he doesn't know when - or if - he can go home. He feels isolated in the trailer, which is located 90 miles southwest of his former New Orleans home. He has no way to get to the store and relies on another evacuee for food and supplies. "I'm at the end of my life and I never knew I'd be relying on someone like this," said Orsini, holding back tears. "When I wanted something, I'd go out and get it."

The research into the major causes of death in adults found that over the past 45 years, China has undergone a huge health transition. Infectious disease has been replaced by the same chronic killers that plague the West.

676. 'Water pill' recommended first for blood pressure
http://www.onlinenews.com.pk/details.php?id=86778

Description: 'Water pill' recommended first for blood pressure ISLAMABAD: For people at risk of heart disease or stroke, treatment of high blood pressure should begin with a diuretic (water pill) rather than doxazosin, a type of drug known as an alpha-blocker, researchers advise. The recommendation is based on results from the ALLHAT (Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial) study, which compared various blood pressure-lowering drugs in over 42,000 patients with hypertension.

Description: By EMMA ROSS The Associated Press STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Folic acid and vitamin B pills do not ward off heart attacks or strokes and may even be harmful when combined, new research suggests. Studies showing that the vitamins lower levels of a substance in the blood suspected of playing a role in the development of heart disease have prompted hundreds of thousands of heart patients in the developed world to take them. However, the first large study of the question, presented Monday at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology, found that although the supplements dramatically lowered the levels of homocysteine, they offered no heart protection. "The message is clear here: Don't take folate or B-6 in the hope that it will stop you having a heart attack or stroke. If there was a real major effect, they would have seen it," said Dr. Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, which was not connected with the study.

680. Aspirin use desirable before heart surgery-study
http://www.onlinenews.com.pk/details.php?id=86222

Description: ISLAMABAD: Taking aspirin before heart bypass surgery may help patients recover and survive better, researchers said. They said their study, published in the journal Circulation, should reassure surgeons who have advised patients to avoid taking aspirin in the days before surgery because they feared it could cause bleeding. "Aspirin reduces clotting of the blood, so it can help prevent a heart attack or stroke by making it less likely a clot will form and block an already narrowed artery," said Dr. Scott Wright, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who led the study.
