511. Parkinson's drugs potentially help stroke victims
http://www.studlife.com/news/2007/04/11/News/Parkinsons.Drugs.Potentially.Help.Stroke.Victims-283460
    8.shtml

Description: Researchers at Washington University's School of Medicine have discovered a possible treatment for victims of stroke whose symptoms include motor neglect by using known treatments for Parkinson's disease. Dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure sensation, was found to be the critical link between treatment for Parkinson's disease and stroke. In stroke patients, neglect can be defined as the inability to respond to a stimulus on the opposite side of a brain lesion, usually in the right hemisphere. There are several types of neglect, including spatial neglect, where a person does not detect stimulus on one half of the visual field, and motor neglect, where there is a delay in physically reacting to the stimulus.

Description: SEATTLE, April 10, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- A first-of-its-kind report looking at the prevalence and cost of type 2 diabetes complications shows that an estimated three out of five people (57.9 percent) with type 2 diabetes have at least one of the other serious health problems commonly associated with the disease, and that these health problems are taking a heavy financial toll on the United States. In 2006, the nation spent an estimated $22.9 billion on direct medical costs related to diabetes complications.* The new report, titled State of Diabetes Complications in America, also shows that estimated annual healthcare costs for a person with type 2 diabetes complications are about three times higher than that of the average American without diagnosed diabetes. These complications, which can include heart disease, stroke, eye damage, chronic kidney disease and foot problems that can lead to amputations, cost a person with type 2 diabetes almost $10,000 each year.

514. Cocaine in a Young Brain
http://www.sharedresponsibility.gov.co/?idcategoria=674

Description: to 44, confirmed that cocaine use doubles the risk of stroke, even among younger populations. A team from the University of Texas’ Southwester Medical Center conducted the study over a period of three years, from 2000 to 2003, sampling patients from 500 different hospitals in the state of Texas. Led by Dr. Arthur Westover, the student team researched the relationship between cocaine and amphetamine abuse and stroke incidence among young adults. Their findings were not good. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts in the brain, leading to internal bleeding and a loss of blood to important tissues. An ischemic stroke, in contrast, takes place when an artery leading to the brain is abruptly blocked, cutting off the brain’s blood supply. The student team found that the chances of a young adult of having either type of stroke are doubled by cocaine use. And, for those who abused amphetamines, their chances of having a hemorrhagic stoke increased by five times. The study’s lead author, Dr. Arthur Westover, said, “Using amphetamines or cocaine significantly increases an individual’s risk for a stroke.”

518. Parkinson's drug may ease stroke -related disability
http://www.emaxhealth.com/114/10747.html

Description: Stroke Treatment Scientists have untangled two similar disabilities that often afflict stroke patients, in the process revealing that one may be treatable with drugs for Parkinson's disease. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis showed that stroke damage in a brain region known as the putamen is strongly linked to motor neglect, a condition that makes patients slow to move toward the left side. Like stroke patients with motor neglect, Parkinson's patients are also slow to initiate responses involving movement. Scientists attribute this deficit in Parkinson's disease to loss of neurons that use the neurotransmitter dopamine to regulate activity in the putamen 's disease.

Haley, M.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center here, and colleagues. Amphetamine abuse, though not cocaine abuse, was also associated with increased mortality after hemorrhagic stroke, they wrote in the April issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.
