The rule also put on hold a 25-year study of stroke and heart disease that used the medical records of more than 40,000 Minnesotans, said Dr. Russell Luepker of the University of Minnesota. 406. WHAT TO TELL YOUR PATIENTS Aspirin useless against heart attacks ... http://www.nationalreviewofmedicine.com/issue/what_tell_patients/2007/4_tell_patients_19.html 2007-11-09 18:03:54 Description: WHAT TO TELL YOUR PATIENTS Aspirin useless against heart attacks in women By Judah Issa Daily aspirin prevents heart attacks in men, but not in women, confirms a study in the October 18 BMC Medicine. The Canadian research team looked at 23 previous studies with over 113,000 patients and found that only men benefited from aspirin's ability to prevent a first heart attack. It's still not clear why there's a difference. Aspirin does prevent stroke in women, but many of your female patients are probably taking it under the illusion it will prevent heart attacks too. "The study just proves that patients should not self-medicate," says lead author Dr Don Sin, a respirologist at UBC. |

408. Study links birth control pill to arterial plaque http://www.medicexchange.com/mall/departmentpage.cfm/MedicExchangeUSA/_81693/3026/departments-conten tview 2007-11-07 09:06:26 Description: Study links birth control pill to arterial plaque Date: Wed, 7 November 2007 by Will Dunham A European study released on Tuesday has raised new concerns about the safety of women's long-term use of the birth control pill, suggesting increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Women who had used oral contraceptives were more likely than those who did not take the pill to have a buildup of plaque in their arteries, the researchers told an American Heart Association meeting. "The main concern is if you have higher plaque levels that you might develop a clot on one of these plaques and have a stroke or a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or sudden cardiac death," Dr. Ernst Rietzschel of Ghent University in Belgium, who led the research, told reporters. "That's the main risk with having plaque, with having atherosclerosis." Rietzschel's team studied 1,301 women ages 35 to 55. |

UMCP is one of just five hospitals to earn this designation in New Jersey. "There's a saying in stroke care that 'time is brain.' The longer medical treatment is delayed, the greater the likelihood of permanent damage to the brain," said Melissa Schori, MD, Senior Vice President, Princeton HealthCare System and Vice President of Medical Affairs. 410. Book Explores History of Slave Ships http://www.whec.com/article/stories/S231997.shtml?cat=10073 2007-10-20 09:04:51 Description: Book Explores History of Slave Ships "What I’m basicaly interested in is how captains, ship captains, officers, sailors and the slave interacted with the slave ship. What was the actual reality? Of course, it was quite horrifying," said Rediker, a University of Pittsburgh history professor. "In many respects, the development of the Americas through slavery and the plantation system is unthinkable without the slave ship." Rediker also devotes a chapter to John Newton, the slave ship captain perhaps best known for writing the hymn "Amazing Grace." Newton had a Christian conversion while a slave captain, but did not immediately renounce the trade and continued to serve as a captain until a stroke forced him to retire. He did not write "Amazing Grace" until well after his retirement. |
